UK cargo ships to carry armed guards

Speaking from a meeting of Commonwealth heads of state in Perth, Australia, UK Prime Minister David Cameron has announced that cargo ships sailing under a British flag will be able to carry armed guards to protect them from pirates.

Industry operating costs rising

According to an independent survey by Moore Stevens, Operating costs in the shipping industry increased by an average 2.2% in 2010, in sharp contrast to the historic 2% fall in costs seen in 2009, which was the first time since 2002 that operating costs had fallen.

Algeria plans new port between Algiers and Ténès

Algeria’s Ministry of Transport is planning to construct a new seaport roughly halfway between Algiers and Ténès, and has begun a tender process to identify suitable sites for its location. Recent increases in the volume of traffic through the port have led to congestion, necessitating construction of the new facility, which would alleviate pressure on other Algerian ports such as Algiers, Béjaïa, Ténès and Oran.
