Certain shipping lines have postponed the proposed peak season surcharge for up to fourteen days as freight forwarders report minimal problems regarding container shortages and vessel space from Asia to Northern Europe. Although these reports are received well in the industry is it fair to say this is just temporary good news?
There has been a softening in the market with some carriers proposing to mitigate a peak season surcharge and propose deals instead that will ensure continued business with clients. This could mean that some carriers still have access to capacity and equipment and are thinking about maintaining business throughout and after this ‘crisis’ period.
Forwarders have stated that although volume has increased in line with peak season expectations, space can be found on vessels and the container shortage has yet to have an impact.
