Air cargo volumes and revenue has been growing healthily in recent months. It is encouraging to see progress in an industry that has been blighted by natural disasters and a poor economy.
Two top carriers have reported a profitable first and a half quarter, with one carrier reporting a top net profit for the past six months of over eight times that it was this time last year. Aircraft that had been parked up during the 2009 recession have been used again due to increase in demand. One carrier also has plans to invest in thirty new A350-900 long-haul aircrafts and six B777-300s to meet future expansion needs.
Other good news is that Manchester Airport’s World Freight Terminal lounge has had a record month for tonnage both inbound and outbound. The terminal currently handles around 170,000 tonnes of import and export freight and mail annually, with a view to be handling 250,000 tonnes by 2015. Manchester’s largest source of import cargo predominantly comes from the Far and Middle East, with exports mainly going to North America.
Although current air freight rates remain low, news of progression indicates strength in the marketplace and brings confidence to those affected by difficult trading conditions such as the Volcanic Ash and heavy snowfalls. With the Christmas peak season approaching, demand is sure to increase so take advantage of the low rates currently being offered by the air freight team at Cardinal Plus.
